European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
