Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
